Sausalito History
Sausalito's Founding
Sausalito has a rich history. It was occupied for centuries by native Americans, as a choice location full of wildlife. In 1822, an English sailor named William Richardson arrived in San Francisco and decided to stay. Living near the Presidio, he was one of the first settlers in San Francisco. His business interests stretched across the bay to Sausalito, where he supplied ships anchored there with firewood and fresh water. Richardson sought, and eventually received in 1838, a land grant for the entire Marin headlands -- 19,500 acres. He named his ranch Rancho del Sausalito -- Ranch of the Little Willow Grove. California was, of course, still part of Mexico at the time. Richardson built a ranching and maritime empire from his home base in Sausalito, but it was not to last. It would seem that the explosion of activity triggered by the Gold Rush would have been a great opportunity for him but, in fact, it led to his grounds being overrun and his interests scattered. He died broke in 1856, having lost the ranch because of his debts.

If You Love the Outdoors…
The Marin Headlands Only Minutes Away!
The Marin Headlands, the wilderness next door to Ridgeway Apartments Homes, is renowned for gentle rolling hills, beautiful views and military history. It is a jewel of the Bay Area. The vibrant headlands provide a striking backdrop to the world's largest art deco structure, the Golden Gate Bridge.
A short drive from Ridgeway Apartments Homes, the brilliant, booming sky in the headlands almost adequately reflects the intricate and subtle beauty to be discovered along the beaches, streams and hills.
The headlands are spectacular year-round, but the fall offers exceptional birding. The coastal flyway used by migrating hawks, or raptors, offers a sometimes up-close view of these magnificent, powerful fliers. At the peak of migration, in the middle of October, up to 100 hawks will fly overhead each hour.
